Goodbye Public and Private by James Sanders

Goodbye Public and Private by James Sanders

$16.00

Goodbye Public and Private is the work of a barbarian Thomas Edison—poems that are not simply wildly inventive but rather the end-result of a perpetual cycle of creation, destruction, and re-creation of poetic convention on every page. “[A]s a series of discarded habits,” Sanders offers us everything from diagram poems—the21 st century equivalent of Charles Peirce’s logical graphs—to procedural, conceptual, concrete, hand-written, hand-drawn poems driven as much by sight and sound as sense. We are awash in language and we are grateful. – Lori Emerson

I don’t remember that well. Can’t have been too great.

James Sanders is the original poppin’ fresh Pillsbury Doughboy of poetry. His writing is bubblegum muzak wrapping and creamy filling with hidden pop rocks explosions. Like the elusiveness of his favorite Sesame Street character Mr. Snuffleupagus, Sanders writes the invisible presences that lurks in the most   everyday language. The “lattices” that score many of Sanders’ poems capture the inseparability of the banal and intense. These writings perform emotion and syntax. Sanders’ gift is poetry that reads as my own private cheesedog but – when bitten into – splooges out the public truths of our McLives.

– Sandy Baldwin, Director, Center for Literary Computing, West Virginia University
